235. Arthur William JENNEY 1 (Arthur Henry , William , Edmund , Arthur , Arthur , Edmund , Robert , Arthur , Francis , Arthur , Francis , William , Edmund , William , John ) was born on 24 Feb 1860 in Ditchingham, Norfolk. He died on 19 Jan 1934.

They had the following children:

  240 M i Charles Arthur Richard HARPUR-CREWE 1 was born on 8 Sep 1917. He died in 1981.

From the Derby Evening Telegraph, 23 March 2004:

'THE ECCENTRIC FAMILY WHO LIVED CUT OFF FROM THE WORLD 09:30 - 23 March 2004
The Calke estate was bought by the Harpur family in 1622 and the current house was rebuilt by the 4th baronet, Sir John Harpur in 1701-4.....
His son having predeceased him, the estate passed to Sir Vauncey [Harpur-Crewe]'s eldest daughter, Hilda, who was married to Colonel Godfrey Mosely. To help pay death duties, they sold some of Sir Vauncey's collection. [...] When Hilda died in 1949, Calke went to her nephew, Charles Jenney, who changed his name to Harpur-Crewe in 1961 after he became High Sheriff. The Harpur shyness reasserted itself and, for 32 years, Charles made Calke one of the most impenetrable country houses in England. He died suddenly in 1981 while setting mole traps in the park, having made no arrangements to protect the house from death duties. As a result, his younger brother, Henry, was saddled with an £8m tax bill and was forced to sell up. At his request, the entire house, contents and nearly all the estate, after some Treasury wrangling, passed into the care of the National Trust in 1985.
  241 F ii Airmyne Isabel Marie HARPUR-CREWE 1 died in 1999.

The property then passed to the National Trust, which carried out a sensitive restoration, preserving Calke's singular atmosphere. Credit was rightly accorded to the heritage lobby for saving Calke, but not enough recognition was given to the personal contribution of [Henry Harpur-Crewe].

He was born Henry Francis Jenney on Feb 25 1921, the second son of Arthur Jenney, a stockbroker scion of a long-established Suffolk squirearchical dynasty, by his wife Frances, youngest daughter of Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe, 10th (and last) Bt, of Calke Abbey.

When the great state bed at Calke - which had lain in pieces in a packing case since its arrival sometime in the 18th century - was assembled and sent to Washington for the "Treasure Houses of Britain" exhibition in 1985, Harpur-Crewe went along for the ride.
